How to be Successful in the Dressing Room

Feel good with your purchase, and yourself.

Alrighty, I have been asked on different occasions- how do I walk away from a clothing store with a BOAT LOAD of clothes? Well, to be honest some of the following shopping tips! I was actually shopping today, and started writing some general rules down that I like to do, and that some friends  might find to be helpful while hunting through the racks! Again, these are things that I do.. but might surprisingly be that next step to a happy shopping trip for yourself;)

1. Have an idea of what you are shopping for.
If its for back-to-school clothes, think fall..2 months of summer left and do I really need a full priced sun dress when it two months I'll want a peacoat? A good idea to keep in mind while shopping during mid season is versatility. A dress that's great for summer, but also throw a pair of leggings under or knee high socks.

2. Wear proper undergarments.. aka WEAR A BRA
Sounds a bit silly, however I seem to find myself shopping at times when I just got out of the gym or wearing a tight top that doesn't call for a bra. Cons for shopping- 1. clothes do not fit the same without one on period. 2. If you are shopping in a store that carries bras you can try on with, chances are they a.) don't have your size and b.) have a chunky-a** sensor tag on it. (trust me.. I know this). Also opt not to wear your I'm-doing-laundry-only-pair-left-wonder-woman-granny-panties. Adds bulk to the hinny, and adds a layer. General rule of thumb- wear undergarments you will wear normally under clothes.

3. Wear make up and style hair.
This is all about making yourself feel good, and look confident. You want to look in the mirror and be like "dang I look good in this" not "oh lord my bags are kickin' today". If you wear make up on a regular basis, don't skip it for shopping. Likely, going au natural while staring into a mirror will only bring the mood down. (Unless of course you have a great complexion and don't wear any. More power to you!) But for the majority of the group, swipe on some gloss and mascara at least. The florescent lighting is not flattering at times, we know this. So let us fight back ;)

4. Wear Heels.
This is definitely not for everybody. I like to wear heels when I try on clothes, because it makes me feel sexier and makes my legs look longer. (Come on 5'4''.. booster is appropriate!) If you are a shorty, or not as confident with your bottom half as you should, throw on a pair of wedges (For comfort) or for the go-getters some stilettos and dazzle yourself! After all, you are shopping for yourself. So why not look good for you? If you aren't a heel wearing bad ass, opt for a cute pair of flats.

5. Come prepared with your own tunes.
I've found myself in a shopping lull because of the whack radio station playing. (Really, Rihanna? Where have you been all my life ife ife ife.. Um on repeat on every radio station!) Quick fix, plug into your own ipod or pandora radio and jam out. This helps keep you in a shopping bubble and positive. Shoot might even inspire you to grab something out of the norm!

6. Grab multiple sizes.
Sizes are never the same in every store. Unless you shop at the same store for everything thing you own and any time you shop, you likely are well aware of rogue sizes. To stay in the swing of the shopping flow grab multiple sizes of items you are ify about. Sure, might take you a little bit longer to get through the dressing room but it will save you mucho mucho time by not having to run out and get a different size. Feel weird about being a medium but fitting better into a large top? Don't worry, most measurements are different and the only one that knows what size you are wearing is you.

7. Mirror Shots
You are unsure you want an item, or you are shopping by yourself and need a second opinion. Enter mirror shot. Grab your phone and snap a picture of you in the outfit or have a friend take one of you. The perks of doing this: 1. You get an idea of what it looks like on camera! (lets face it.. many of us are guilty of "mirror pics". Plus side, you are doing it for a cause!) Duck lips.. are allowed.. I guess. 2.You are now able to send a picture to a friend for opinion. 3. If you decide to walk away from the item, you still have a photo of it. If you decide to buy it later on, you know what it looks like! Or what you could buy similar.

8. The more the merrier!
Try on more than one item at a time. I like to do a clean run through of the store and try everything on at once. That way, I have plenty of things to try on and the items that were sort of forgotten about are likely things you wouldn't want to buy! "Oh I grabbed this?..When will a Ke$ha cut off tank be appropriate.."  :( By trying on more items, you get to narrow down from more than a select few and have a plethora of things to choose from.

9. Nix it, Return it.
If you end up buying something and it has sat in your closet for a few weeks, Simply return it. There is no shame in returning something you will never wear!

Well there you have it folks, some easy and.. different ways to trying on clothes and being happy with what you have bought. When it comes down to it, you are trying clothes on for you. So dress up, ditch the ever-so-comfortable sweat suit, and head out with confidence. :)
